His tongue exhibits a peculiar an out-of-this world language exclusively made for his kind to understand. He is your friend since elementary school who offered his service of braiding your hair for free during your lengthy discussion on pollination in your science class. He was your defender in high school when you were stuck in an all-girls quarrel over the famous basketball varsity. He is now your college friend who always makes you grin and pee in your pants in laughter when he cracks his jokes. He remains your ally, a.k.a comforter, everytime you feel like strangling yourself with anything right after a break-up. He is she. Our society is completely diversified with almost all the cruelest and rudest treatment to those who belong to the third kind. (Just to remind you, it's not those weird-looking creatures, who had pickle-like faces with slimmy green antennas). They are men who search for their true identity, aside from being the masculado hunk who plans to contribute his share in the world's total population. His "search" is a product of his realization that he's not born to be the stereotypical 'man' this society demands but a normal person who wants to be recognized as a 'human being'. He is oftentimes in constant struggle against the societal stigma he is placed into. History could tell us its share of stories about these people living in the limelight of identity-finding. They come in different characters. There are some who, during their developing years, found constant girl companion and had the pleasure of holding Barbie's petite hips and not that of Voltes V. They usually grew up being too feminine. There are others who had never imagined that at one point in their life, they would just wake up banging their heads and convincing themselves that their previous night dream of kissing Ben Affleck and not Jennifer Garner is just a false product of the subconscious' stupidity-- a strike of a 1:1,000,000 possibility ratio of being gay. One who belongs to this group would then step back and take a minute pondering, which will eventually lead him to do the chant: "I am a guy. I am a real man. I've got a gorgeous girlfriend, and i definitely hate pink". They are tagged as the 'pretenders' acting like straight guys, as if convincing themselves would easily transform them to the masculine gigolos they need to be. Of course, there are those hayagang-ladlaran folks who are firm with their chosen sexuality, and coul even shout to the world that they are 'gays'. No inhibitions bound them to give limitation to their self-expression. They would even go for a signature campaign to push for the establishment of an independent gay nation for them. Wherever they come from is not our problem anymore. The fact that gays need our complete understanding and acceptance is serious enough to make us aware that they are equal to males and females. Thus, they deserve the respect and oppurtunities reserved for both sexes. A lot of us think that being gay is a disease. Maybe because since our primary years, we have been spoon-fed with the must-be attitudes to conform to our society's standards. Is choosing something that will help you achieve inner peace and self-actualizaion wrong? Many will insist the issue on morality. Morality has then become the precise measure of a man's over-all personality, regardless of what he has done, and of what he didnt. Seeing gays, gives a lot of people the instant perception that they are nothing but nymphomaniacs whose desires revolve around finding sexual happiness with their fellow men. It is not new to me when I encounter gays being ridiculed by straight guys on jeepneys, at school, almost anywhere. Unlike in other countries where gays are given the right to express themselves without expecting the nasty looks and smirks on other people's face, they are able to take part in other social issues, stand up for their rights and counted among the citizens of their country. They are looked up to as individuals who are productive, teated normally and fairly, and not tagged as immoral. They cann freely speak ou what they want to say and they are able to prove something in the society. These rights are usually deprived from gays here in the Philippines. The fact that gays here are labeled as chimosas and parloristas, whose level of knowledge just flow within the barriers of hair shampooing and relaxing and are viewed as little in worth. Gays coming out from their 'closet', with their personal revelations, are nothing but normal. The only thing that makes it appear unusualand different is the thought that it is not accepted in this society, dominated by a conservative view on sexuality. Even Alexander the Great, who was a homosexual, made a great difference in hisory. Admit it! Upon discovering this, you might raise your eyebrows in trepidation, thinking that this great man in world history is gay. Gays should receive what is suppose to be accorded to every human being, should be treated like one, and never considered a "mugblood" as what the author of Brusko Pink termed. After all, we are the same mischievous human beings trying to hide behind the curtains of marality and human standards. Chos***
